そして、この大会の中で、最も印象深く、世界に衝撃を与えた、ショッキングな試合が、準決勝のドイツとブラジルとの試合だった。

開催国にして、優勝候補の最右翼、ブラジルが、無惨にもドイツの餌食になった。

ブラジルも、グループステージではドイツ同様に、調子は今ひとつ。決勝トーナメントの初戦もメキシコにPK勝ちと苦しい展開だった。それでも準々決勝では、苦戦が予想されていたが、コロンビアに快勝した。

その試合で、チームの中心ネイマールが大怪我。しかも、キャプテンのチアゴ・シウバが累積警告で出場できず、ドイツがやや優勢と見られていた。

試合が始まってみれば、前半11分のミュラーのゴールで、チームの中心選手がいないブラジルは、チームが崩壊。ドイツの大勝となった。

この試合だけを見たら、ドイツというチームを、超攻撃的なチームだと思ったに違いない。

そして、アルゼンチンとの決勝戦。

マスケラーノを中心に、堅い守備を誇るアルゼンチンの守りに、ドイツは苦戦した。

どちらが勝ってもおかしくないような内容の試合だった。しかし、ドイツの方が、準決勝を1日前に戦っており、しかも、アルゼンチンはPK戦まで行っていた。

そうしたコンディションの差が、微妙に勝利に影響したのかもしれない。

お互いが、PK戦を覚悟した延長後半8分に、ゲッツェが決勝ゴールを決め、試合を終わらせた。

こうして振り返ってみると、ドイツの優勝への道のりは、それほど簡単なものではなかった。

グループステージから、決勝戦まで、次第に調子を上げていったというよりは、戦った相手により、あるいは自分たちのコンディションにより、アップダウンで勝ち進んでいった。
