ベスト8に進んだ8か国は、いずれもグループステージで1位になった国。

2位だったチームが、別なグループの1位だった国を破った、いわば、下剋上はなく、グループステージでの結果が、そのままベスト8に反映された形になった。

また、この大会では、GKの活躍が目立つ。メキシコのオチョア、ブラジルのジュリオ・セザール、アメリカのハワードなど。

何と、8試合のうち、5試合のマン・オブ・ザ・マッチが、GKだった。こんな多くのGKがマン・オブ・ザ・マッチになった大会は、過去に記憶が無い。

キーパーがいいので、なかなか点が入らず、試合が白熱し、ゴールは試合終了直前、あるいは延長で勝負が決まり、あるいはPK戦に突入した。

PK戦に入れば、勿論、GKが主役となる。例えば、ブラジルとチリのPK戦では、ブラジルのジュリオ・セザールの活躍で、ブラジルは辛くも勝利を収めた。

残念ながら、メキシコのオチョア、アメリカのハワード、アルジェリアのライスなど、マン・オブ・ザ・マッチを取ったGKの多くは、すでに敗退してしまった。

しかし、まだ、ブラジルのジュリオ・セザールや、ドイツのノイアーなど、名GKは残っている。今後の彼らの活躍からは、目が離せない。
